  Ceiling Solutions are Looking Up with TIM 1000

  When it comes to AV functionality and microphone design, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For some, a well-dressed conference table with a microphone neatly installed at each seat complete with its own mute button and status LED is nirvana. For others, seeing anything on the table presents an eyesore and impacts the room’s design.

  For those looking for a more minimalistic aesthetic and a fully usable table surface, an ideal solution is putting the microphones overhead in the ceiling. But note, we are not talking about hanging microphones. More and more, today’s high-end designs call for microphones that are virtually “invisible” with capabilities to fully retract in order to maintain an unobstructed ceiling plane.

  Now, it is one thing for a ceiling microphone to “disappear” into the ceiling. It is quite another for it to really perform when it does so. To do this properly, the microphone needs to capture sound from the person speaking at relatively the same level at different distances within the room.

  Some microphone companies do this by setting up different pattern lobes and tweaking them in order to provide an acceptable level of performance and intelligibility. However, this process can be time-consuming and restricts participants to speaking from one location…their seats.

  At Clockaudio, we do things a bit differently or rather TIM does things differently. Our Tracking Intelligent Microphone (TIM-1000) comes as one unit and installs in minutes. It can be either flush mounted on the ceiling or hang on a pole mount. TIM is all about simplicity, so either way you do it, installation is streamlined, quick and easy.

  What’s more, unlike most ceiling microphones, TIM will set itself up upon connecting to a PoE enabled network cable without any additional commands given to it. Set it and TIM knows what to do, so there is less chance for user error. As another benefit, with TIM’s ease of installation, you can expect to see labor savings in both time and money across the board.

  As your most important meeting “participant”, TIM will scan the room to find any steady state noise and will attenuate it, making the room quieter. As soon as someone speaks, TIM zeroes in on the person speaking and effortlessly tracks them wherever they move within the space to maintain a consistent volume level. Even when someone else starts speaking, TIM can ‘follow’ any other source of speech anywhere in the room as they move around, constantly adjusting their output level for a more even level at the far end.

  At the core of TIM, is Clockaudio’s exclusive APT (Adaptive Proximity Tracking) that continuously adjusts the level of the different participants at different distances from the array, and outputs the same level for each talker.

  Hut, Hut, Hike: How Huddle Rooms Have Changed the Field of Play for Conference Rooms

  Just a few decades ago, organizing a meeting meant you had to try and schedule all participants to be present in the same room at the same time. A task that was often easier said than done. For a national or global company and people in various locations around the world, meetings used to require travel and time spent out of the office, adding significant costs.

  Fortunately, technology has since evolved, creating new ways to set up and participate in meetings. Enter the world of Audio/Video Conferencing, which has become the standard medium for exchanging thoughts and ideas in today’s fast-paced world.

  Following the creation of Audio/Video Conferencing came the birth of webinars and on-line classes, and distance learning class sessions via webcams installed in schools, universities, hospitals and other institutions. The need and demand for sharing knowledge instantly with the rest of the world beckoned, and technology answered and changed the way we conduct meetings.

  With a plethora of communication devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets, communication is possible virtually anywhere. The new smaller and more intimate design of these spaces allow larger spaces, like boardrooms and main conference rooms, to be left available for their own appropriate uses.

  For huddle rooms and the results that meetings in these spaces can deliver, their smaller size is not an issue. In fact, they can be as effective, or more effective, as larger boardrooms but at a fraction of the square footage, furniture and design cost.

  With the increasing quality of audio and video technologies, either with soft codecs or more sophisticated equipment, these rooms are often a much less-expensive solution and are rapidly becoming the standard. It is common for companies to incorporate multiple Huddle Rooms to foster an on-going sense of collaboration and to make spaces accessible and available to everyone on staff.

  Now people can simply make a phone call, send an instant message or email to the parties involved just minutes before walking into a huddle room, and instantly connect to share documents and ideas. Participants can see each other in real-time, as if they were in the same room, with the added benefit of visual cues that are not available on a traditional conference call.

  However, as cost effective as huddle rooms can be, sound quality and intelligibility are areas that should never be value engineered.   From boardrooms and classrooms to primate habitats, microphones should not only sound good but be built to withstand any kind of monkey business!

  More often than not, when considering the proper microphone to be used for an installation, the focus is on the sound quality of the microphone. This month, however, we want you to also consider how the microphone might be used, or misused, so that you can also see the importance of focusing on the construction quality of the microphone.

  For one reason or another, either by accident or on purpose, some people can’t help themselves and knowingly, or unwittingly, end up damaging or destroying microphones. Here are just a few examples of what we've seen or heard happened.

  In one case we’ve seen, a manufacturer’s field technician literally walked across the client’s boardroom table to perform maintenance on a projector. While he might have thought he was doing a good job, he accidentally stepped on (and flattened) the grill of a through table boundary microphone. Ouch!

  Then there’s the case of the misused and abused microphones. We had a call from a teacher a few years back who said he was missing all of the grills from his classroom's through table boundary microphones. After some investigation, it turned out that the students were getting creative and making filters out of the grills, and using them as part of, let’s just say, an inventive smoking apparatus for select legal/illegal herbs…

  Then there’s the story of the misplaced pen. Here, people decided to convert the grills of a through table boundary microphone into their own "inkwells". Yes, people actually took a pen and stabbed it into the grill of the microphone and made it a very expensive pen holder. On the brightside, we took this information (and since necessity is the mother of invention), we created a new model, the C012E-RF, or better knows to our internal teams as the “Assault Version” of our through table boundary microphone. This mic was built to be vandal proof. Even the microphone capsule is strategically placed, making it inaccessible if someone tries to destroy it.

  Perhaps one of our favorite stories that talks about the robust manufacturing of our mics, was about the time we provided microphones for the Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary (click here for that case study).

  At the Learning Sanctuary we were challenged to build a microphone that the primates would not or could not easily find in their environment and that would be difficult to dismantle or destroy. This project was truly monkey business, but Clockaudio’s omnicondenser microphone, a water-resistant product that was chosen for the project held up well. In fact, our C007-WR microphones were made of Delrin, a very sturdy plastic, so the build quality was excellent for the habitat’s purposes. In addition, because this product was originally designed for surveillance and recording in sensitive areas, it had an extremely low profile, keeping them out of the monkey’s curious eye.

  These are just a few of the many stories we’ve heard over the years. We hope that it helps you to see the value in understanding the “climate” you are working in and the “inhabitants” that will be interfacing with your equipment.

  In understanding both of these variables, you will be able to better identify and choose the right microphone for any given application. Since vandalism of your equipment can occur almost anywhere, even in the most prestigious companies, classrooms, courtrooms and habitats, it is wise to make the investment into better built microphones.

  As for Clockaudio, you will not find sturdier, more rugged microphones than ours. So, if you’re thinking of saving money by installing less-quality microphones with the idea that your visitors, students or boardroom users are angels, think again! We suggest you go for the more durable, robust Clockaudio option and save money in the long-run! Your results will most definitely be...Clearly Different!

  Mute is not the only function for Clockaudio’s “Buttons”

  Why there are virtually limitless possibilities for this non-verbal cue option.

  In business settings like boardrooms and conference rooms, visual cues are critical in keeping people informed and focused on important matters. It allows for information to be provided in a glance, and for an easier flow of non-verbal communication. In many ways this can reduce confusion, improve efficiencies, increase productivity, and enhance security.

  One visual cue that stands out is the button or touch switch available with many of Clockaudio’s professional microphones. The button, acting as a high/low contact closure, can set in motion an assortment of commands that are only limited by your creativity.

  Anyone that has used one (or many) of Clockaudio’s professional microphones can understand the tremendous benefit of having an integrated button with LED to instantaneously mute the microphone. But aside from giving you the opportunity to keep unwanted noise or that nagging cough out of the zoom meeting you are hosting; did you know that these Clockaudio “mute” buttons can be used for virtually any other logic signal you can imagine?

  

  For example, when connected to the room’s control system, Clockaudio’s TS003 Capacitive Touch Switch can be used to trigger the system to raise and lower blinds on a window - all with the touch of a button. If you want to have an effortless way to drop or recoil a projector screen, the touch switch can signal the control system to do that too.

  Program the room’s controls to be triggered to use the button to turn the lights on or off or configure it to function as a panic button with a color that signals there may be a concern or possible situation in progress.

  With Clockaudio’s RGB LED capability, you have an extra layer of “information” you can provide at the button. By using a system of color codes, you can customize non-verbal commands. In fact, with literally hundreds of color choices, you can easily set different status indicators to mean just about anything.

  Over the years, we have learned from integrators many of the ways that our “buttons” have been used to provide information. Here are just a few examples.

  

  One of the US’s top national, political networks (rhymes with box), integrates the TS003 button in the ceiling to trigger the control system to alert occupants upon entering a space. This status signal enables people within the space to easily recognize whether the room is live – keeping people from talking on air when they should be keeping quiet and that goes for both sides of the aisle!

  For one of our clients with a top-secret facility, as part of the room’s controls, the TS003 buttons were programmed to indicate the level of security clearance for the information that was being discussed within a room. Simply by assigning a distinct color to each clearance level, the button could relay critical info that provide a system of checks and balances. This allows clients to immediately know that only the right people are receiving the necessary information.
